Tahiti is extremely wealthy in archaeological sites. Traditional marae can be found and explored throughout Tahiti, Moorea, Raiatea, Tahaa and Huahine. However, there are two island groups where the traditional culture remains in tact and where large wooden statues (similar to those on Easter Island) can be found. Both the Marquesas in the far north and Austral Islands in the far south are stunning wild islands with amazing coastlines and rich in history. These islands have little accommodation and few tourists, and remain the best islands in Tahiti to explore and to meet the friendly locals.
