Tahiti Accommodation is amongst the most glamorous and romantic holiday destination in the world. Most of the thirty or so five star resorts have wonderful overwater bungalows which sit directly above turquoise lagoons with glass floors so you can watch tropical fish swim beneath you. However, it all comes with a hefty price tag: a typical over-the-water bungalow costs from US$400 per night. Even the cheapest standard hotel garden view room costs from US$150 per night making it the most expensive destination in the South Pacific and amongst the most expensive in the world. Most hotels are obliged to sell only at the full rate (the rack rate) and don't offer Internet or direct booking specials - for the best deals try a south pacific travel specialist. Late minute specials are seldom offered.

The large international hotel chains of the Sheraton, Intercontinental, Accor and Sofitel are all here, designing large lifestyle resorts with fantastic swimming pools, first class restaurants, elaborate over-the-water bungalows and re-creating beaches of white sand with lagoons of fish and dolphins.
The three main holiday destinations are the main island of Tahiti (location of the International Airport), neighbouring Moorea Island and Bora Bora Island, a forty minute flight to the west. These three islands account for 80% of all accommodatioin in Tahiti.
Apart from the large hotels, there are many excellent Pensions or Fare around the group, usually a bed and breakfast style room or private unit within a family garden. These offer much better value for money - a simple Pension room with en-suite bathroom will cost from US$100 per night.
For the backpack traveller, French Polynesia offers few dorm rooms and budget rooms with shared facilities go for about US$20 per night. Camping on French Polynesia, and to a greater extent on Moorea, is the best way to save the money.
